The FIA has unveiled a package of revisions to the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, with most set to come into force in time for the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. The changes follow weeks of consultation between the governing body, teams, power unit manufacturers, Formula One Management, and the drivers themselves, after early races under the new rules highlighted several areas of concern.
While the update is not a complete rewrite of the 2026 rulebook, it touches on multiple aspects of a Grand Prix weekend: qualifying, wet-weather running, race procedures, and race starts. All proposals will be submitted to an FIA World Motor Sport Council e-vote for ratification. If approved, everything except the race start measures will be implemented immediately in Miami. The start-related systems will instead be tested and evaluated during the Miami weekend before formal adoption.
In a lengthy statement, the FIA said: “A number of refinements to the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship regulations were agreed today during an online meeting between the FIA, Team Principals, CEOs of Power Unit Manufacturers and FOM. The final proposals presented during today’s meeting were the result of a series of consultations over the past few weeks between the FIA, technical representatives and extensive input from F1 drivers. Discussions around potential adjustments were based on data gathered from the first three events of the 2026 season. The 2026 regulations were developed and agreed in close partnership with the FIA, teams, OEMs, Power Unit Manufacturers, and FOM. Changes to the regulations were discussed against the backdrop of this collaboration. The proposals agreed today were as follows and will be implemented from Miami apart from the race start changes that will be tested in Miami and adopted following feedback and analysis.”
Qualifying Changes Target Energy Management and Superclip
The biggest adjustments center on how drivers manage energy during a qualifying lap. Under the current 2026 rules, excessive energy harvesting and long “superclip” phases have forced drivers into lift-and-coast behavior, even in qualifying. To address that, the FIA is reducing the maximum permitted energy recharge from 8MJ to 7MJ. The aim is to cut down on harvesting time and promote more consistent, flat-out driving.
The change is expected to reduce maximum superclip duration to roughly 2 to 4 seconds per lap. At the same time, peak superclip power will rise from 250kW to 350kW. By increasing the power output, cars will spend less time recharging and drivers will have a lower workload managing energy deployment. That 350kW figure will also apply during race conditions.
The FIA is also giving itself more flexibility on energy limits. The number of events where alternative, lower energy limits may be applied has increased from 8 to 12 races per season. The change allows the rules to better adapt to the unique characteristics of different circuits, such as high-speed tracks with long straights versus tight, twisty layouts.
Race Rules Adjusted to Control Closing Speeds
For the race itself, the FIA is capping the maximum power available through Boost at +150kW, or the car’s current power level at the moment of activation if that is higher. The cap is designed to limit sudden performance spikes that can create dangerous closing speeds between cars.
MGU-K deployment is also being split into two modes. In key acceleration zones, defined as from corner exit to the next braking point and including designated overtaking zones, deployment will remain at the full 350kW. On other parts of the lap, it will be limited to 250kW. The FIA says these measures should reduce excessive speed differentials while still preserving overtaking opportunities and the overall performance feel of the 2026 cars.
New System to Monitor Race Starts
The most experimental change involves race starts. The FIA has developed a new “low power start detection” system. It is designed to identify cars that show abnormally low acceleration immediately after clutch release. The system’s purpose is to spot potential technical issues or anomalies early, improving safety and fairness on the run to Turn 1. Because it is new technology, the FIA will run it as a test in Miami, gather feedback and data, and then move to full adoption if the trial is successful.
Why the Changes Are Happening Now
The 2026 power unit regulations represent one of the biggest technical shifts in recent F1 history, with a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. Data from the first three rounds of the 2026 season showed unintended consequences. Drivers reported long periods of lift-and-coast in qualifying to manage energy, while races produced extreme closing speeds that raised safety concerns. Teams and drivers pushed for action before the problems became baked into car development.
The consultation process included direct input from the drivers, something the FIA highlighted as “extensive.” With car concepts still relatively new, the governing body has a window to make refinements before teams lock in long-term development paths.
The World Motor Sport Council e-vote is the final hurdle. If passed, fans will see the revised energy rules, superclip changes, and race deployment limits in effect at the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. The low power start detection system will run in the background in Miami, with results analyzed before it becomes part of the sporting regulations.
For teams, the timeline is tight. Engineers will need to adapt energy strategies and software mapping to the new limits within days. For drivers, the hope is for fewer compromises on push laps and safer, more predictable racing in traffic.
The FIA stressed that safety and the best interests of the sport remain the priority. By acting quickly after early feedback, the governing body aims to prevent the 2026 era from being defined by the same frustrations that dogged the start of the season. Miami will be the first real test of whether these refinements deliver the balance of performance, safety, and racing quality that everyone is asking for.
