Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has moved quickly to shut down a controversial engine loophole ahead of the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, introducing an important tweak to the sport’s technical regulations after concerns were raised during the opening races of the season.

The rule adjustment focuses on the MGU-K energy deployment system, specifically during what engineers call the “power-limited” phase. Several teams had complained that the previous setup was creating strange and frustrating driving behaviour, with drivers unexpectedly losing electrical power after only minor throttle corrections.

This issue became noticeable during the first three rounds of the championship and triggered growing concern inside the paddock. The problem centered around how the hybrid system reacted when drivers slightly lifted off the accelerator while exiting corners or correcting oversteer.

Under the old regulation, drivers needed to keep the throttle pressed above 98 per cent in order to trigger the limited-power mode. However, even the smallest lift off the pedal would reset the system completely. Once the driver reapplied full throttle, the entire cycle would restart, often causing excessive and unnecessary battery energy usage.

This led to a frustrating scenario where drivers could lose valuable electric deployment simply because of a tiny steering correction or a brief moment of instability through a corner. In high-speed Formula 1 machinery, even the smallest throttle adjustment can make a major difference, and teams felt the rule was punishing normal driving inputs too harshly.

To solve the issue, the FIA has now introduced a revised system. Drivers must still exceed the 98 per cent throttle threshold, but once they do, they will automatically enter the power-limited mode after one full second. Crucially, brief throttle lifts immediately after reaching that threshold will no longer reset the system.

In simple terms, the cars should now deliver power more consistently, reducing the risk of sudden battery drain caused by slight driver corrections.

One of the most high-profile examples of the issue came during the Australian Grand Prix weekend, when McLaren driver Oscar Piastri crashed during the pre-start reconnaissance lap. His incident highlighted how sensitive the power delivery could become under the previous rules.

Ferrari star Charles Leclerc also experienced the problem during sprint qualifying in China. While exiting Turn 10, Leclerc had to slightly ease off the throttle to control a moment of oversteer. That tiny lift dropped him below the critical 98 per cent threshold, forcing the system to reset.

As a result, he consumed too much electrical energy before reaching Turn 11 and found himself short on battery power for the following straight, costing him valuable lap time. Leclerc was visibly frustrated afterward, describing the situation as “beyond words.”

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella also criticized the old regulation, calling it “peculiar” and suggesting it created unnecessary complications for both drivers and engineers.

McLaren technical director Mark Temple has welcomed the FIA’s decision, believing it represents a significant improvement for the sport as teams continue adapting to the latest generation of power unit regulations.

“The intention is definitely to make significant improvements,” Temple explained. “If there’s one thing we’ve learned from these regulations, it’s that you simply can’t predict everything.”

Temple admitted that while the changes are promising, the true test will come once the cars hit the track in Miami this weekend. After all, simulation and theory can only reveal so much, and Formula 1 often exposes hidden problems under real race conditions.

He remains optimistic but realistic, acknowledging that further issues may still appear as the season develops.

“Surely, we’ll identify a few more quirks along the way that we can address,” he added.

The Miami Grand Prix will now serve as the first real test of the revised regulations, with teams hoping the update delivers smoother energy deployment and removes one of the more frustrating technical headaches of the 2026 season.

As Formula 1 continues to evolve with increasingly complex hybrid systems, the FIA’s latest intervention shows just how quickly the sport must react when technology begins affecting the quality of racing.
