Mercedes are once again at the centre of attention ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix after reports surrounding a driver replacement began circulating online. However, the latest available information indicates that the Silver Arrows’ confirmed 2026 race drivers remain George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Mercedes officially confirmed Russell and Antonelli as its 2026 driver pairing, with team principal Toto Wolff stating that the team was pleased with the partnership and wanted to continue with both drivers into the new regulations era.
The confusion appears to be linked to an earlier Bahrain Grand Prix announcement involving Mercedes reserve driver Fred Vesti. During the 2025 Bahrain weekend, Vesti was confirmed to replace George Russell specifically for the opening free practice session. The change was part of Formula 1’s requirement for teams to give rookie drivers opportunities during FP1 sessions.
Vesti drove Russell’s Mercedes during FP1 at Sakhir before Russell returned to the cockpit for FP2. Mercedes later confirmed that Vesti completed his programme successfully, while Russell and Antonelli resumed their normal weekend duties.
That distinction is important because an FP1 substitution is not the same as replacing a driver for the Grand Prix itself. There is currently no verified information showing Mercedes has permanently removed either Russell or Antonelli from its 2026 Bahrain race seat.
The situation is particularly significant because Mercedes enters the latter part of the 2026 campaign in a strong championship position. Following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Russell secured victory after starting from pole position and holding off Max Verstappen in a remarkably close finish. The result also reduced the gap between Russell and championship-leading teammate Antonelli.
Antonelli has endured a difficult Azerbaijan weekend despite maintaining his position as one of the central figures in the championship battle. The young Italian crashed during qualifying and was forced to start from 16th on the grid. Despite the setback, he fought his way through the field and eventually finished fifth.
Mercedes’ official driver information currently lists Russell and Antonelli as its 2026 Formula 1 drivers, while Fred Vesti is identified as the team’s reserve driver.
Therefore, while the phrase “Mercedes confirms driver replacement” may attract significant attention, the available evidence does not currently support the claim that Mercedes has replaced one of its regular drivers for the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix.
If Vesti or another reserve driver is eventually called upon during a practice session, that would represent a temporary substitution rather than a permanent change to Mercedes’ race lineup.
