Red Bull Racing has confirmed a surprise driver change ahead of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, with Isack Hadjar ruled out of this weekend’s event after suffering a wrist injury during the summer break. Liam Lawson will step into the Red Bull seat alongside Max Verstappen at Zandvoort.
The decision represents an unexpected opportunity for Lawson, who currently races for Red Bull’s sister team, Racing Bulls. The New Zealander previously earned promotion to Red Bull at the beginning of the 2025 season, but his time with the senior team lasted only two races before he was replaced by Yuki Tsunoda.
Lawson has since rebuilt his reputation with Racing Bulls and has enjoyed a strong 2026 campaign. His return to the senior team therefore arrives at an interesting moment, particularly with the 2027 driver market beginning to take shape.
Although Red Bull has made clear that Lawson’s Dutch Grand Prix appearance is an injury replacement, the weekend could nevertheless become an important audition. With several F1 seats still uncertain for 2027, a strong performance against four-time world champion Verstappen would give Lawson another chance to demonstrate that he belongs at the highest level.
The circumstances also make Lawson’s return particularly remarkable. Zandvoort was the circuit where he made his Formula 1 debut in 2023, when he replaced the injured Daniel Ricciardo. Three years later, he is returning to the same venue to temporarily replace another injured driver.
The reshuffle does not stop at Red Bull. With Lawson moving up, former Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda will return to Racing Bulls for the Dutch Grand Prix, partnering rookie Arvid Lindblad. Tsunoda has been serving as Red Bull’s reserve driver during the 2026 season.
For Hadjar, the injury comes at an unfortunate time. The French-Algerian driver has been competing in his first season for Red Bull and will now be forced to watch from the sidelines. The team has wished him a speedy recovery and expects the absence to be temporary.
For Lawson, however, the situation presents a potentially career-changing opportunity. If he can deliver a convincing performance in the RB22, questions about his future could intensify.
Red Bull may only need Lawson for one weekend, but a strong showing at Zandvoort could make his name difficult to ignore when decisions about the 2027 grid are eventually made.
