Fresh speculation surrounding Max Verstappen and his long-term future with Red Bull Racing has intensified, with reports suggesting the reigning world champions are already preparing contingency plans in case the Dutch star decides to leave the team.
What initially appeared to be another wave of Formula 1 paddock rumours is now being viewed far more seriously inside Red Bull, according to multiple reports. Concerns about Verstappen’s future have continued to grow since the introduction of Formula 1’s upcoming regulation changes, which the four-time world champion has openly criticised in recent months.
Verstappen previously expressed frustration with the direction the sport is taking under the next generation of regulations, describing the future cars as moving away from the pure racing experience drivers enjoy. Those comments sparked rumours that he could eventually consider stepping away from Formula 1 altogether or seek a move elsewhere once the new era begins.
Although Red Bull showed signs of recovery with an improved performance during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, uncertainty remains over whether they can maintain their competitive edge throughout the season. Rivals Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and McLaren Formula 1 Team continue to apply pressure, with Mercedes reportedly preparing a major upgrade package for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
McLaren, meanwhile, have emerged as one of the strongest teams on the current grid after a series of impressive performances. The Woking-based squad particularly caught attention in Miami, where Lando Norris showcased strong pace during the sprint sessions and established himself as a serious contender at the front of the field.
Both Mercedes and McLaren are now being linked as potential destinations for Verstappen if he eventually chooses to leave Red Bull. McLaren’s interest has attracted even more attention following reports that discussions had recently taken place between the team and Verstappen’s management camp.

Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, motorsport presenter Will Buxton discussed the growing speculation alongside analysts Naomi Schiff and Jolie Sharpe. During the conversation, Buxton revealed that Red Bull are reportedly exploring alternative driver options should Verstappen decide to move on.
One of the biggest names being linked to the team is current McLaren star Oscar Piastri. Reports from Autosport claim Red Bull are highly interested in securing the Australian driver as a potential replacement for Verstappen in the future.
Buxton suggested that Red Bull’s interest in Piastri indicates the team are taking the situation far more seriously than many initially believed.
According to him, Red Bull would not be actively evaluating replacement options unless they genuinely felt Verstappen’s exit was a realistic possibility. The growing concern appears to stem not only from interest shown by rival teams, but also from uncertainty over whether Verstappen still sees himself remaining in Formula 1 long term.
Autosport further reported that Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies and Red Bull GmbH managing director Oliver Mintzlaff are both prepared to move forward with plans involving Piastri if Verstappen ultimately decides to leave.
At this stage, no official decision has been made by Verstappen regarding his future. However, the fact Red Bull are reportedly considering life after their dominant champion highlights just how uncertain the situation has become behind the scenes.
