Kimi Antonelli produced one of the most remarkable performances of the 2026 Formula 1 season at Monza, fighting back from 19th on the grid to win the Italian Grand Prix in front of his home fans. However, following the dramatic race, attention has turned to the post-race proceedings and the possibility of further scrutiny surrounding the final classification.
Antonelli entered his home Grand Prix facing a huge challenge after a power-unit change left him with a grid penalty. Despite starting near the back, the Mercedes driver immediately began carving his way through the field, gaining several positions before the early red flag changed the complexion of the race.
The restart provided Antonelli with another opportunity, and the young Italian continued his remarkable recovery. He eventually found himself battling at the sharp end of the field alongside Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who had started near the front.
Russell appeared to have the advantage for much of the race, particularly after committing to a different tyre strategy. But a Virtual Safety Car period ultimately played into Antonelli’s hands. Mercedes brought the championship leader into the pits for fresher tyres, allowing him to attack Russell during the closing stages.
Antonelli eventually made the decisive move with just a few laps remaining, securing victory and completing an extraordinary comeback. The result also made him the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since 1966.
The post-race atmosphere, however, remained intense as officials continued dealing with incidents from an eventful afternoon at Monza. Several situations required attention from the stewards, including a separate investigation involving Yuki Tsunoda’s positioning on the starting grid. That investigation did not involve Antonelli’s victory itself.
The FIA’s official post-race documentation confirms Antonelli as the winner, with Russell classified second and Max Verstappen third. During the official press conference, Antonelli also reflected on the significance of standing on the podium at his home race, describing it as the most special podium of the season.
For Antonelli, the result could prove enormous in the championship battle. His victory extended his advantage over Russell to 66 points, strengthening his position at the top of the drivers’ standings after 13 rounds. Russell himself acknowledged that Antonelli is performing at an exceptionally high level and admitted that overturning the current championship deficit would be extremely difficult.
While headlines surrounding a potential threat to Antonelli’s podium are likely to generate considerable attention, there is currently no official indication that his Italian Grand Prix victory has been stripped or that he faces a confirmed post-race penalty.
Instead, the evidence points to Antonelli retaining his historic Monza victory — a result that could become one of the defining moments of his 2026 championship campaign.
