Max Verstappen has provided a reassuring health update after suffering a huge crash during the opening lap of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
The Red Bull driver’s home race ended almost immediately when he lost control of his car at the final corner. The track remained damp in places following rain before the start, and Verstappen appeared to lose the rear of his Red Bull before hitting the barrier heavily. His damaged car then slid back across the circuit, with debris scattered across the track and one wheel detached.
The incident forced race officials to bring out the red flag, temporarily stopping the Grand Prix while marshals cleared the debris and made the circuit safe.
Despite the frightening nature of the accident, Verstappen was able to climb out of the car himself and walk away from the crash. He later confirmed that he was feeling okay, providing immediate relief to his team, family and the thousands of Dutch supporters watching from the grandstands.
Speaking after the incident, Verstappen explained that he believed he had made contact with the SAFER barrier and suggested that the more frontal nature of the impact may have helped reduce the consequences compared with a sideways collision.
“I’m good,” Verstappen said when asked about his condition.
The crash was particularly painful for Verstappen because Zandvoort was hosting what is expected to be the final Dutch Grand Prix for the foreseeable future. The four-time world champion had hoped to give his home fans something to celebrate, but his afternoon ended before he could complete a competitive lap.
Red Bull’s Liam Lawson became the team’s only finisher, eventually taking seventh place, while Lando Norris went on to win the race ahead of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari.
For Verstappen, the immediate priority will be recovering from the physical and emotional impact of the incident before turning his attention to the remainder of the championship.
Although the crash looked severe, the latest information indicates that Verstappen escaped serious injury. His confirmation that he was okay will come as welcome news to Red Bull and his supporters following one of the most dramatic moments of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
